After 260 Days in a Shelter, This Heartbroken Dog “Cries Nonstop” Waiting for a Home

In the quiet corners of the Hamilton County Humane Society in Indiana, a once-joyful dog named Major now sits with a heavy heart, quietly crying after spending more than 260 days in the shelter.

Major, a four-year-old terrier-pit bull mix, was surrendered by his former owners—an abandonment that left visible scars on his spirit. Though he initially stayed upbeat, charming the staff with his gentle personality and love for his favorite Jolly Ball, the long wait for adoption has slowly worn him down.

Nicknamed “Major Hunk” and “Major Heartthrob” by shelter staff, he became a beloved figure in the facility. His affectionate nature and big heart made him a standout—yet he was continually overlooked by potential adopters.

As the months dragged on with no forever home in sight, shelter workers began noticing a shift. “His playful spark is fading,” they wrote in a heartfelt post. “He now spends his days quietly sobbing in his kennel, no longer the happy dog we first met.”

In hopes of easing his anxiety, Major was moved from the noisy kennels to a calmer visiting room. But what he truly needs is a stable home with someone patient and understanding—someone who sees the loyal companion beneath the sadness.

Major would thrive best in a home without small children or cats, though he can be compatible with other dogs. Because of his size and strength, a meet-and-greet is encouraged to ensure he’s the right fit.

His adoption listing reads:
“Are you ready to open your heart to a strong, sweet, and loyal friend? Major is waiting for you.”

After nearly a year of loneliness, Major still holds on to hope. All he wants is a second chance—and a family to call his own.

If you can’t adopt, consider sharing his story. The right person may just be a scroll away.
