Country Music Stars Unite to Honor George Strait at the Kennedy Center
Country music’s biggest stars came together to honor the man widely known as the “King of Country,” George Strait, during the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors.

On Dec. 6, while presenting the honorees with their medallions at the White House, President Donald Trump praised Strait’s influence, saying it’s impossible to imagine country music as we know it without him. That sentiment carried into the official Kennedy Center Honors ceremony on Dec. 7, which later aired on Dec. 23.
The tribute to George Strait was introduced by Vince Gill, who spoke warmly about Strait’s impact and authenticity. “He gives such a true and genuine view of country music,” Gill said. “Your authenticity is why we call you our King.” Throughout the performances, cameras caught Strait smiling and occasionally wiping away tears as he watched fellow artists celebrate his legacy.
The musical selections highlighted the remarkable span of Strait’s career, featuring songs from his early breakthrough album Strait From the Heart released in 1982, all the way through Troubadour, his 2008 release.

Brooks & Dunn Open With “Amarillo By Morning”
The tribute began with Brooks & Dunn performing “Amarillo By Morning.” As the duo sang, Strait appeared visibly emotional. Although the song was originally recorded by Terry Stafford in 1973, it became one of George Strait’s signature hits after he released his version on Strait From the Heart.
Miranda Lambert Delivers a Powerful “Run”
Miranda Lambert also took part in the tribute, performing the ballad “Run” from Strait’s 2001 album The Road Less Traveled. Her rendition was filled with emotion, showcasing both the song’s vulnerability and her deep respect for Strait’s catalog.

Vince Gill Performs “Troubadour”
Vince Gill didn’t just introduce the tribute—he also stepped onstage to perform “Troubadour,” one of Strait’s most reflective songs. The moment felt especially meaningful, as Strait had recently honored Gill with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the Country Music Association Awards in November.
Strait’s surprise appearance at that CMA ceremony had already been memorable, and seeing the two together again at the Kennedy Center added another layer of significance. Gill’s performance was heartfelt and sincere, clearly reflecting his admiration for Strait and the enduring influence of his music.

The tribute served as a powerful reminder of George Strait’s unmatched contribution to country music. From timeless classics to modern favorites, his work has shaped generations of artists and fans alike.
Congratulations poured in for George Strait and all of the 2025 Kennedy Center honorees, celebrating a night dedicated to legacy, authenticity, and the enduring power of music.
