SHE MOVED TO A QUIET CABIN BY THE POND SO HER LITTLE BOY COULD GROW UP SAFE THEN THREE BLACK CARS CAME RACING DOWN THE ROAD.
PART 2
She pressed it.CLICK.For a second, nothing happened. Just Cooper breathing hard next to her. Then – BEEEEEEP BEEEEEEP BEEEEEEPAn alarm so loud Cooper covered his ears. Outside, the men in black froze mid-run. One of them yelled, “DOWN! DOWN! IT’S ACTIVE!”Shelby didn’t run upstairs. She ran to the kitchen window and pulled the curtains just enough to see.The pond. The water in the pond started to bubble. Lily pads shaking. Then, right in the middle of the pond, the water split open and a black metal hatch rose up from underneath, like something out of a movie.Cooper gasped. “Mom… what is that?”The men outside saw it too and started backing away from the fence. Fast.”They weren’t coming for us, baby,” Shelby whispered, her hands shaking. “They were following us.”The hatch opened with a hiss of steam. And a man in a perfect black suit walked OUT of the pond. Not wet. Not swimming. He walked out like he used the pond as a door.He looked straight at Shelby’s cabin window and smiled.”Hello, Shelby. You were supposed to press that button 3 years ago. We’ve been waiting.”Shelby grabbed Cooper and pulled him close.”Stay behind me. No matter what he says, stay behind me.”The suited man started walking slowly across the grass toward the house. The men in black on the road? They dropped to one knee and bowed their heads to HIM.He wasn’t with them. He was their BOSS.He knocked on the door. Three soft knocks.”Shelby… you can open the door. Or I can tell Cooper who his father really is.”Cooper looked up at his mom, confused. “My dad?”Shelby’s face went completely white. She reached for something inside the kitchen drawer. Not a knife.A key. A small silver key she had taped under the drawer for 5 years and never touched.TO BE CONTINUED…
PART 3 – The KeyShelby’s hand was shaking so bad she almost dropped it.”Mom, what’s that key for?” Cooper whispered. She didn’t answer. She unlocked the floorboard under the rug. The one Cooper always thought was squeaky. She pulled it up. Inside wasn’t money. Wasn’t a gun.It was a little blue backpack. Cooper’s baby backpack. The one he wore when he was 2.”Put it on,” she told him.”What? Why?””JUST PUT IT ON, COOPER! NOW!”He put it on. It beeped. The man outside knocked again. Louder this time.”Shelby. The deal was 5 years of quiet life. You got 5 years. I kept my word. Now it’s my turn.”Shelby stood up and finally opened the door. Just a crack.”You said you’d never come near him,” she said, her voice ice cold.”I said I’d never come near him IF you stayed hidden. But you posted that photo, Shelby.””What photo?””Last week. Cooper at the pond. You posted it. Your sister liked it. The system found his face.”Shelby’s stomach dropped. She did. One photo. Just one on her old private Facebook. The suited man looked past her, at Cooper and the backpack that was now glowing faint blue.”Hi, Cooper. I’m… a friend of your mom’s. That backpack you’re wearing? Your mom made it for you before you were even born. Do you know what it does?”Cooper shook his head, terrified.”It makes you invisible to people like me. Your mom is very smart. Smarter than all of us.”He looked back at Shelby.”Take it off him, Shelby, and we can talk like adults. Leave it on, and I have to take both of you back down there. And you don’t want to go back down to the pond, do you?”Shelby stepped in front of Cooper.”You want him because of what he can do, don’t you?”The man finally stopped smiling.”No. We want him because of what HE WILL DO. In 10 years. We saw it.”Silence. Just the pond bubbling.Cooper tugged his mom’s shirt. “Mom… the backpack is getting hot…”Shelby looked down. The blue light was turning RED.”Oh God,” she whispered. “It’s scanning him. It’s too early!”She tried to rip the backpack off, but the straps locked tight around Cooper. The suited man took a step back, actually scared for the first time.”NO! TAKE IT OFF! HE’S NOT READY!”The light from the backpack shot straight up into the cloudy sky like a beacon that could be seen for miles. And from deep inside the pond hatch, something ELSE started to come out. Something much bigger than a man.PART 4 COMING – What came out of the pond?
The red light shot into the sky and the ground shook.THUD. THUD. THUD.Something huge was climbing out of the pond hatch. The men in black on the road ran. Even the suited man stumbled backward.Shelby screamed and tried to rip the backpack off Cooper, but it wouldn’t budge.”MOM! IT’S BURNING!”And then…It stopped. The light didn’t just stop. It got sucked BACK into the backpack. All of it. The sky went dark again. The pond went completely still. Like glass. And the hatch?A little girl climbed out.Not a monster. A little girl. Maybe 8 years old. Wet hair, bare feet, wearing the EXACT same blue backpack as Cooper. She looked at Cooper and smiled.”Hi, Cooper. You took your time.”Shelby froze. Her hand over her mouth.”No… no no no, that’s impossible…”The suited man dropped to his knees. “We were too late.”Cooper was confused. “Who is she?”Shelby knelt down, tears running down her face.”That’s… that’s Lily. Your sister.””What? I don’t have a sister!””You did,” Shelby whispered. “Five years ago. Before we moved here. Before I pressed the button the first time.”THE TWISTThe pond wasn’t a door. It was a RESET button.Five years ago, Shelby lived in this same cabin with TWO kids – Cooper and his big sister Lily. There was an accident by the pond. Lily fell in. Shelby pressed the red button then – a prototype her husband, a scientist, had built under the pond that could rewind 5 minutes of time around the pond. But it malfunctioned. It didn’t rewind 5 minutes. It rewound 5 YEARS. It erased Lily completely and left only Cooper, a baby, with no memory of her.Shelby remembered. No one else did. So she stayed by the pond, waiting, fixing the fence every day for 5 years, knowing one day Lily would climb back out at the exact second the machine reset. The suited man wasn’t a villain. He was her husband. Cooper’s dad. He built it. The men in black were his team, coming to shut it down before it trapped Lily forever. The little girl ran across the grass and hugged Cooper.”I’ve been swimming for 5 years, silly! Mom said you’d wait for me!”The backpacks – both blue – finally stopped glowing and clicked open, empty.Shelby dropped to her knees and hugged BOTH her kids in the grass by the pond. For the first time in 5 years, her family was whole. Her husband walked up behind her, took off his suit jacket, and wrapped it around all three of them.”You can stop fixing the fence now, Shelby,” he said softly. “We’re finally safe to go home.”And for the first time, the cabin by the pond was quiet for real.
