The emergency began around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 3, when a car carrying three teenage girls drove off the I-10 boat launch and into the river. The driver later told police she was following GPS directions and did not realize she was heading into the water.
Evans, who was hanging out nearby with friends, saw the car plunge into the water and immediately took action:
Initial Response: He removed his shirt, shoes, and phone before diving into the dark, murky water to reach the sinking vehicle, which was approximately 20–25 yards from shore.
Saving the Girls: Evans reached the car and helped the three girls climb onto its roof before swimming them back to shore one by one. He noted that his background as an athlete and having learned to swim at age 3 helped him endure the physically taxing 25-yard swims.
Saving the Officer: During the rescue, Moss Point Police Officer Gary Mercer arrived and jumped in to help. However, one of the panicked victims accidentally pulled the officer underwater, causing him to swallow water and begin drowning. Evans turned back, grabbed the struggling officer, and pulled him to a point where he could safely walk.
Outcome and Recognition
All four individuals were taken to a local hospital and recovered from the incident. One of the victims, Cora Watson, later posted on social media that Evans saved her life “right before my last breath”.
The Moss Point City Officials and the Mississippi Senate formally presented Evans with a Certificate of Commendation for his bravery and selflessness. Moss Point Police Chief Brandon Ashley stated that the situation could have ended tragically without Evans’ immediate assistance.
