16-Year-Old’s Quick Action in River Rescue Protects Three Girls and a Police Officer
- Initial Response: He removed his shirt, shoes, and phone before diving into the dark, murky water to reach the sinking vehicle, which was approximately 20–25 yards from shore.
- Saving the Girls: Evans reached the car and helped the three girls climb onto its roof before swimming them back to shore one by one. He noted that his background as an athlete and having learned to swim at age 3 helped him endure the physically taxing 25-yard swims.
Saving the Officer: During the rescue, Moss Point Police Officer Gary Mercer arrived and jumped in to help. However, one of the panicked victims accidentally pulled the officer underwater, causing him to swallow water and begin drowning. Evans turned back, grabbed the struggling officer, and pulled him to a point where he could safely walk.
