I have been living alone for the last eight years, and I am seventy-three years old. I didn’t anticipate or yearn for it. That’s just how it happened. I was afraid at first. I thought loneliness would weigh heavily on my chest. I can now say something I never would have imagined: living alone may be profoundly human, meaningful, and calm.

It took time for it to happen. There were times when I almost lost my way, and I made a lot of mistakes—more than I’d like to acknowledge. But as time went on, I discovered a crucial fact: being alone does not equate to isolation. Small, daily decisions are what determine whether a life is peaceful or painful.
