James Van Der Beek, the beloved actor best known for his iconic role as Dawson Leery in the hit 1990s teen drama Dawson’s Creek, has passed away at the age of 48. He died peacefully on February 11, 2026, following a courageous fight against stage 3 colorectal cancer.

His family announced the news via an official Instagram post:
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Van Der Beek rose to fame starring in Dawson’s Creek (1998–2003), portraying a sensitive, introspective teenager navigating love, friendship, and growing up in a small coastal town. The series, co-starring Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson, became a cultural phenomenon and defined a generation. He also starred in the popular football drama film Varsity Blues (1999) and appeared in numerous other TV shows and movies throughout his career.
In November 2024, Van Der Beek publicly revealed his stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis (initially detected in late 2023), using his platform to advocate for earlier screenings and raise awareness about the disease, which has been rising among younger adults.
