Why You Should Cover Your Sink Before Going on Vacation
Before heading out on vacation, most people remember the basics—unplugging electronics, securing valuables, and turning off the water supply. One spot that’s often forgotten, though, is the sink in the kitchen and bathroom. Overlooking it can result in unpleasant odors, excess moisture, or even unwanted insects waiting for you when you return.
When a home is left unused, especially in warmer weather, the plumbing isn’t being flushed regularly. As a result, the water in the drain traps can evaporate. Once that happens, sewer gases can travel back up through the pipes, causing musty or foul smells. The damp, stagnant conditions can also create an easy entry point for pests such as gnats, ants, or cockroaches.

The good news is that preventing this problem is simple and costs nothing. Place a paper towel over the drain opening, then set an upside-down glass on top of it. This creates a physical seal that helps keep odors, gases, and insects from coming up through the drain.
This method can be more dependable than using regular sink stoppers, which may loosen, dry out, or fail to maintain a tight seal over time—especially during longer trips. A glass stays in place without needing suction and doesn’t rely on a perfect fit.
To prepare your sink before leaving, follow these steps:
-
Clean the sink thoroughly.
-
Pour hot white vinegar down the drain to help break up residue.
-
Let it sit for a few hours, then flush with warm water.
-
Rub a lemon wedge around the drain to leave a fresh scent.
-
Dry the sink completely.
-
Cover the drain with a paper towel and place an upside-down glass over it.

It may seem like a minor detail, but it can make a noticeable difference. Coming home to a clean, fresh-smelling house—free of bugs—makes returning from vacation far more relaxing.
Before your next trip, remember the sink. It’s a small task that helps ensure your home is just as welcoming as you left it.
