U.S. Claims Large-Scale Military Strike on Venezuela, Says Maduro Captured
The United States has claimed it carried out what it described as a “large-scale military strike” against Venezuela and that the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, was captured in what would mark a dramatic escalation following months of U.S. threats to use force against Caracas.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump made the announcement early Saturday, stating that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, had been detained and removed from Venezuela. He later said the operation was a complete success and suggested the United States would play a significant role in determining Venezuela’s future leadership.
According to Trump, U.S. authorities are actively considering next steps and do not intend to allow a simple transfer of power that mirrors the previous government. He said decisions about Venezuela’s future are being made now and emphasized the need for direct U.S. involvement.
The alleged operation follows a prolonged pressure campaign by Washington that included deploying military resources to the Caribbean region and targeting vessels accused of involvement in drug trafficking. U.S. officials have repeatedly claimed these actions were aimed at stopping the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.

The Venezuelan government has consistently denied allegations linking Maduro to drug trafficking, accusing Washington of using such claims as justification to remove him from power and gain access to Venezuela’s oil resources.
In a statement released Saturday, the U.S. attorney general announced that Maduro and his wife had been indicted in federal court in New York. The charges reportedly include conspiracy related to narcotics trafficking and cocaine importation.
While it remains unclear whether Flores faces identical charges, U.S. officials described the couple as alleged international drug traffickers and said they would be prosecuted in American courts.

Officials added that the legal process would move forward in the United States, where Maduro is expected to face trial if the claims are upheld.
