“Why a Harry Potter Cast Reunion May Never Happen”
Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has said that a reunion involving the original cast is unlikely to ever happen, citing the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues.
Columbus, who directed the first two films in the franchise, previously expressed interest in bringing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to the big screen. However, he now believes such a project would be impossible with the original actors involved.

“The situation has become incredibly complicated because of all the political elements,” Columbus explained. He pointed to the fact that major cast members, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have publicly spoken out against Rowling’s stance on trans rights. According to Columbus, the differing opinions within the cast compared to Rowling’s views make a reunion unworkable.
He also revealed that he has not spoken to Rowling in over a decade and admitted he is largely unaware of what is happening in her life now. In contrast, he remains in close contact with Radcliffe and maintains strong relationships with the former child actors from the films.

Over the past several years, Rowling has faced widespread criticism for repeated comments about gender ideology, with many people — including actors from the Harry Potter films — accusing her of holding transphobic views. As a result, she has become increasingly distanced from the cast. Rowling has previously stated that she does not forgive the actors who criticized her, telling them not to offer apologies.
In 2020, Radcliffe publicly expressed support for the transgender community, apologizing for the hurt Rowling’s comments caused within the Harry Potter fanbase. Watson also voiced her support, affirming her respect and love for trans individuals and later made remarks that were widely interpreted as a subtle criticism of Rowling during a major awards ceremony.

Columbus, whose directing career also includes films such as Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire, has shared his disappointment over the situation. While he believes in separating creative work from its creator, he has said he strongly disagrees with Rowling’s views and finds the ongoing division deeply sad.
