Catastrophic Explosion at Pennsylvania Nursing Home Leaves Dead, Missing

At least two people have been confirmed dead and several others are believed to be missing after what officials described as a “catastrophic” explosion tore through a nursing home in eastern Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

Calling the incident devastating, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro addressed reporters during an evening briefing, saying, “This is an incredibly tragic moment for this community.”

The explosion occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Silver Lake Nursing Home in Bristol, located roughly 25 miles northeast of Philadelphia. The blast triggered a large fire and caused severe structural damage to the building.

Bristol Fire Chief Kevin Dippolito said part of the structure collapsed, with sections of the first floor falling into the basement, trapping people inside. Emergency crews immediately began rescue operations amid the dangerous conditions.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people were injured, as victims were transported to multiple hospitals across the region. Officials said at least five individuals are currently believed to be unaccounted for, though they emphasized that the number could change as search efforts continue.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but early indications point to a gas leak. Governor Shapiro said investigators preliminarily believe the blast was triggered by natural gas. Fire officials also reported a strong smell of gas during the emergency response.

Energy provider PECO confirmed that its crews responded to reports of a gas odor at the nursing home shortly after 2 p.m. While they were on site, the explosion occurred. The company said its teams immediately shut off gas and electric service to the facility to protect first responders and nearby residents.

Governor Shapiro praised the emergency response, highlighting the bravery of firefighters who rushed to the scene moments after the blast.

“In those critical moments, we saw true heroism,” he said. “Firefighters ran toward danger to control the fire, secure the area, and most importantly, rescue those trapped inside.”

Search and rescue efforts remain ongoing as authorities work to account for everyone affected by the disaster.
