Richard Chamberlain, the beloved actor who captivated generations with his performances on screen and stage, has passed away at the age of 90. He died peacefully on Saturday in Waimanalo, Hawaii, following complications from a stroke, according to his publicist Harlan Boll.

His longtime partner, Martin Rabbett, released a heartfelt tribute: “Richard is now among the angels. He is free, reunited with those who went before him. Love like his never truly fades. It lifts and carries us onward.”

Chamberlain first rose to fame in the early 1960s as the handsome and compassionate Dr. Kildare in the hit medical drama of the same name. The show, which ran from 1961 to 1966, catapulted him to stardom and earned him a Golden Globe Award in 1963. His striking looks and emotional performances made him a household name and one of television’s first heartthrobs.

Determined to prove his depth as an actor, Chamberlain later immersed himself in classical theater. He took on challenging Shakespearean roles, including Hamlet and Richard II, and earned critical praise in both American and British productions — especially in London’s prestigious West End.

His film career was equally diverse, with roles in The Three Musketeers (1973), The Towering Inferno (1974), and The Last Wave (1977), proving his range across action, thriller, and historical genres.

In 2003, Chamberlain made headlines again — not for a role, but for his courage. In his memoir Shattered Love, he publicly came out as gay, becoming one of the first major male leads of his era to do so. The revelation helped reshape conversations around identity in Hollywood and served as a powerful example of authenticity and bravery.
