Small Backpack Tossed Over Fence at 3 A.M.—Inside Was a Chihuahua Fighting to Survive
In the quiet hours of the night, a Texas homeowner was jolted awake when his dogs erupted into frantic barking. It was around 3 a.m., and he stepped into his backyard with a flashlight, expecting maybe a raccoon or stray cat. Instead, what he discovered left him shaken: a small backpack had been hurled over his fence, and inside—zipped tight—was a terrified Chihuahua.
The little dog, trapped in the stifling heat, could have easily perished had she not been found so quickly. Fortunately, the resident’s dogs were gentle and didn’t attack. Realizing how serious the situation was, he immediately reached out for help.
Rescuers Step In
Kirsten Erwin of Streethearts Project was among the first to hear the news.
“Thank goodness his dogs weren’t aggressive, and that he found her when he did. Texas heat is no joke,” Erwin explained in a social media post.
When the rescuers arrived, they made another heartbreaking discovery: the Chihuahua had recently given birth. “She’s still full of milk, but there were no puppies with her,” Erwin shared. “I just pray they were placed somewhere safe. We’ll probably never know.”
The little dog—soon named Dorothea—was checked for a microchip, but none was found. With no way of tracking her origins, she was taken in by Misfit Mutts Dog Rescue (MMDR), a group devoted to giving abandoned animals a new start.
A New Beginning
Though timid at first, Dorothea quickly showed her gentle nature. “She’s a little shy, but incredibly sweet,” MMDR reported. Under foster care, she began receiving the medical treatment and emotional support she desperately needed.
Once she’s fully stabilized, Dorothea will travel north to Wisconsin, where she’ll officially start her journey toward finding a forever family.
From Neglect to Hope
The mystery of how she ended up abandoned in a backpack—and what became of her puppies—remains unsolved. But what matters most is that Dorothea is now safe, cared for, and on the path to a brighter future.
