Seventh Grader Saves Family from House Fire — Honored as an Honorary Firefighter
In Petersburg, Virginia, a seventh grader is being celebrated as a hero after his quick thinking and courage saved the lives of his family during a devastating house fire. 12-year-old Romir Parker risked everything in a matter of minutes — and four of his loved ones are alive today because of him.
A Split-Second Decision
The fire broke out in early June, on what began as a normal afternoon. Romir was upstairs in his room when he heard an unusual sound from below. Following his instincts, he headed downstairs — and was immediately met by thick, black smoke spreading through the home.
Realizing the danger, Romir acted fast. Inside the house was his grandmother, who could not escape on her own. Without hesitation, he pushed past the smoke, found her, and guided her to safety. Only moments later, firefighters arrived to battle the flames that had already engulfed much of the home.
Officials later confirmed that Romir’s actions made all the difference. Without him, the story could have ended in tragedy.
Recognized as a Hero
Petersburg Fire Chief Wayne Hoover praised the seventh grader’s bravery:
“Even if our crew got there within four minutes, Romir saved his family’s lives.”
To honor his courage, the city presented Romir with a proclamation highlighting his “bravery and presence of mind, well beyond his years.” The fire department also awarded him the title of Honorary Firefighter, welcoming him into their brotherhood of service.
A Future in Firefighting?
Chief Hoover went even further, telling Romir that when he turns 18, a place in the fire brigade will be waiting for him if he ever chooses to join.
For now, Romir is still just a seventh grader — but in Petersburg, he’s already earned the title of hometown hero.
