6 Killed After Pickup Truck Collides with Van Carrying Amish Community Members in Michigan

Authorities in Michigan have confirmed that six people were killed Tuesday afternoon after a pickup truck ran a stop sign and struck a van carrying members of the Amish community in Tuscola County.

The collision occurred in Gilford Township, roughly 100 miles north of Detroit. According to the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office, a total of 13 people were involved in the crash — 10 inside the van and three in the pickup truck.

“Multiple passengers were ejected from both vehicles,” the sheriff’s office reported in a Facebook post. “At this time, there are six confirmed fatalities, while the conditions of the remaining individuals are still being assessed.”

Undersheriff Robert Baxter confirmed that the van belonged to members of a local Amish community and was being driven by a hired driver. “I’m not sure where they were headed or where they were coming from,” Baxter told the Associated Press, “but they’re residents of the county.”

The tragic accident has left the tight-knit Amish community — and the wider region — in mourning, as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash and provide updates on the surviving victims.
