Tragedy in Peru: Passenger Bus Crash Claims 18 Lives, Leaves 24 Hospitalized

A devastating accident early on the morning of Friday, July 25, has left families shattered and a nation in mourning. A passenger bus carrying 66 people careened off a mountain road in the Junín region of central Peru, killing at least 18 and injuring 24 more.

The crash occurred at kilometer 57 of the Central Highway, near the town of Tarma — a notoriously treacherous section of road that winds through steep terrain. The bus had departed late Thursday night from the Yerbateros terminal in Lima, en route to the Andean highlands.

16 Dead at the Scene, 2 More at Hospitals

According to official updates from the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and the Junín Regional Health Directorate (DIRESA), 16 passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Two more succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to nearby hospitals.

Of the 24 injured survivors, several remain in serious condition at hospitals in Tarma and Chanchamayo. Medical teams are continuing efforts to stabilize and treat the victims.

Possible Mechanical Failure Investigated

Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash, but early reports suggest the bus may have been experiencing mechanical issues before the accident. Local media sources cited witnesses who reported trouble with the vehicle in the hours leading up to the tragedy.

Police investigators are now examining whether the crash was caused by a combination of equipment failure, speeding, or driver negligence.

Emergency Response and National Debate

Rescue teams, firefighters, and police officers rushed to the scene shortly after the accident. DIRESA activated emergency protocols to support survivors and offer psychological care to grieving families.

The Ministry of Transport has also been notified to evaluate the safety of interprovincial transport in the region, especially along high-risk routes like the Central Highway.

This incident has reignited ongoing concerns about road safety in Peru, particularly on mountainous highways where narrow roads, unpredictable weather, and limited maintenance create dangerous conditions for travelers.
