Pelosi Confident Democrats Will Reclaim House in 2026, Envisions Jeffries as Speaker

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed strong confidence that the Democratic Party will regain control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Speaking Thursday at the Voters of Tomorrow summit, Pelosi delivered her bold prediction, as reported by Fox News.

The longtime California congresswoman also said she expects House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to become the next Speaker of the House—if the Democrats achieve a majority.

“We’re absolutely certain we’ll take back the House,” Pelosi told a crowd of Gen Z activists, sparking applause. She reaffirmed her certainty with a simple but emphatic, “No doubt.”

Pelosi, who led the House Democratic caucus for 20 years, emphasized the importance of early strategic planning. She pointed to successful Democratic victories in the 2006 and 2018 midterms as examples of how preparation and groundwork can swing control of Congress.

“You need strength the year before the election,” Pelosi said. “That’s when everything comes together—our messaging, our grassroots mobilization, and yes, the funding. But none of that works without one essential piece: a strong candidate.”

Alongside voter outreach and campaign infrastructure, Pelosi said one of the Democratic Party’s key goals is to further erode Donald Trump’s approval ratings ahead of the 2026 cycle. She criticized his current standing, calling it “terrible,” and hinted that dragging his numbers down will be a central priority.

“By October—definitely by November—we will have helped drive his numbers lower,” she said, avoiding directly naming the former president. “With so many dedicated people working on this, we’ll get it done.”

Although Trump’s popularity has seen some gains, his current approval rating stands at 46%, with 54% disapproving, according to a recent Fox News poll. This still marks a five-point improvement from his 41% approval at this point in the 2016 race.

The Voters of Tomorrow gathering featured several high-profile Democrats, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Rep. Ro Khanna, Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, and youth activist David Hogg. Both Harris and Raskin addressed attendees via virtual remarks.

Though Pelosi stepped down from leadership following the 2022 midterms, she remains highly engaged in Democratic politics and continues to speak at party-affiliated events across the country.
