Melanie Safka, the iconic voice behind 1970s classics like “Brand New Key” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” died on January 23, 2024, at the age of 76.

Her children—Leilah, Jeordie, and Beau Jarred—confirmed her passing, saying she “peacefully transitioned from this world to the next” after facing illness.

Melanie’s career skyrocketed after her performance at Woodstock in 1969, and she became known for her distinctive voice and memorable lyrics. She also broke barriers by founding Neighborhood Records, becoming the first woman to run an independent rock label.

Her children described her as “one of the most brilliant, courageous, and passionate women of her generation.”

Fans were invited to honor her legacy by lighting a candle on January 24th at 10 p.m. Central Time.

At the time of her death, Melanie had been working on a new project titled Second Hand Smoke. A Celebration of Life is being planned, with details to be announced soon.
